ROC
Registrar of Companies
Definition
The office under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs that registers companies and LLPs and keeps the official record of their filings.
In plain language
The Registrar of Companies is where a company’s legal existence is recorded. It registers new companies and LLPs, and holds the documents and returns they file afterwards.
When people speak of “ROC filings” or “ROC compliance”, they mean the forms and returns a company or LLP files with the Registrar to keep its public record current.
Example
A change in a company’s directors or registered office is reported to the ROC so the public record reflects it.
